About Godzilla
In 1998, Roland Emmerich's "Godzilla" hit theaters with a roar. The film, starring Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno, was a modern take on the classic Japanese monster movie. While it received mixed reviews from critics, it was a box office success, grossing over $379 million worldwide.
The film follows a group of scientists and military personnel as they try to stop a giant mutated lizard, dubbed "Godzilla," from wreaking havoc on New York City. The special effects were groundbreaking for the time, with the CGI Godzilla towering over buildings and causing destruction on a massive scale.
Despite its success, "Godzilla" received criticism for straying too far from the original source material and for its lack of character development. However, it remains a cult classic for fans of monster movies and has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs.
In a retrospective review, Rolling Stone praised the film's "jaw-dropping" special effects and "thrilling" action sequences, but noted that it "lacks the heart and soul of the original Japanese films." Overall, "Godzilla" is a fun and entertaining popcorn flick that still holds up today.
