About Strange Days

Strange Days, the 1995 sci-fi thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is a mind-bending masterpiece that still holds up today. Set in a dystopian Los Angeles on the brink of the new millennium, the film explores themes of police brutality, racism, and the dangers of technology. The story follows Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes), a former cop turned black market dealer of illegal virtual reality recordings that allow users to experience other people's memories and emotions. When he stumbles upon a recording of a brutal murder, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy that threatens to expose the corrupt underbelly of the city.

Bigelow's direction is nothing short of stunning, with intense action sequences and a palpable sense of tension throughout. The film's use of first-person POV shots and its depiction of a society on the brink of collapse make it feel eerily prescient in today's world. The cast is also top-notch, with Fiennes delivering a standout performance as the flawed and haunted protagonist, and Angela Bassett stealing scenes as his tough-as-nails friend and bodyguard.

Despite its critical acclaim and cult following, Strange Days was a box office disappointment upon its release. However, its influence can be seen in everything from The Matrix to Black Mirror. It's a film that deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated for its bold vision and timely themes.
