Waitress is a 2007 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Adrienne Shelly, who also appears in a supporting role, making this her final appearance before her death.
It tells the story of a young woman trapped in a little town, a loveless marriage and a dead-end job as a waitress, who falls into the next trap of an unwanted pregnancy. Escape beckons when she falls in love with her gynecologist, but he hesitates to leave his practice and his wife. In the end, she has the unwanted baby and falls in love with it. Possessing the infant gives her the strength to leave her hateful husband and to renounce, despite their love, her married doctor. Her gift of creativity, for she adores devising sweet and savoury tarts, enables her to start her own restaurant with a bequest from a customer who sympathised with her plight.
The film debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and went into limited theatrical release in the US on May 2, 2007.
