About André Rieu

André Rieu: The King of the Waltz

André Rieu is a Dutch violinist and conductor who has become a global sensation with his unique brand of classical music. Born on October 1, 1949, in Maastricht, Netherlands, Rieu grew up in a musical family and started playing the violin at the age of five. He went on to study at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège, Belgium, and later at the Music Academy in Maastricht.

Rieu's career took off in the 1980s when he formed the Johann Strauss Orchestra, which specialized in playing waltzes and other popular classical music. The orchestra's first album, Strauss & Co., was released in 1994 and became a huge success, selling millions of copies worldwide. Since then, Rieu and his orchestra have released more than 30 albums and have performed in front of millions of fans in over 90 countries.

Rieu's concerts are known for their extravagant production values, with elaborate sets, costumes, and lighting effects. He often performs in outdoor venues, such as football stadiums and town squares, and his shows are a mix of classical music, opera, and popular songs. Rieu's performances are also known for their audience participation, with fans often dancing and singing along to the music.

Despite his success, Rieu has faced criticism from some classical music purists who accuse him of "dumbing down" classical music. However, Rieu has defended his approach, saying that he wants to make classical music accessible to a wider audience. "I'm not trying to be a highbrow musician," he once said. "I'm trying to be a musician for everybody."

Rieu's popularity shows no signs of slowing down, and he continues to tour and record new music. In 2019, he released his latest album, Happy Days, which features a mix of classical and popular songs. Rieu has also been recognized for his contributions to music, receiving numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the Netherlands Lion and the Knight of the Legion of Honour.

André Rieu may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there's no denying his talent and his ability to bring classical music to a wider audience. As Rolling Stone once put it, "Rieu is the king of the waltz, and his music is a celebration of life, love, and joy."
