About Andy Rourke
Andy Rourke was a British musician best known as the bassist for the iconic band The Smiths. Born on January 17, 1964, in Manchester, England, Rourke grew up in a working-class family and was drawn to music from a young age. He started playing bass guitar in his teens and soon became a fixture in the local music scene.
In 1982, Rourke joined The Smiths, a band that would go on to become one of the most influential and beloved groups of the 1980s. With his melodic bass lines and understated style, Rourke was an essential part of the band's sound, helping to create such classic songs as "This Charming Man," "How Soon Is Now?," and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side."
Despite the band's success, Rourke struggled with drug addiction throughout his career. He was fired from The Smiths in 1986 due to his drug use, but was later rehired for the band's final album, "Strangeways, Here We Come."
After The Smiths disbanded in 1987, Rourke continued to work as a musician, playing with a variety of bands and artists over the years. He also battled his addiction, eventually getting sober in the early 2000s.
In 2010, Rourke reunited with his former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr for a series of live shows, and the two continued to collaborate on various projects in the years that followed.
Sadly, Rourke passed away on January 22, 2023, at the age of 59. His death was mourned by fans and fellow musicians alike, who remembered him as a talented and influential musician who helped to shape the sound of a generation.
