About Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson: The Cowboy Who Became a Hollywood Legend
Ben Johnson was born on June 13, 1918, in Foraker, Oklahoma. He grew up on a ranch and learned to ride horses at an early age. He became a rodeo champion and traveled the country competing in various events. In 1940, he won the steer wrestling championship at the Pendleton Round-Up, one of the most prestigious rodeos in the world.
Johnson's rodeo skills caught the attention of Hollywood, and he was offered a contract by 20th Century Fox. He made his film debut in 1940 in the movie "The Outlaw," directed by Howard Hughes. Johnson's rugged good looks and natural acting ability made him a star, and he went on to appear in over 300 films and television shows.
Johnson was best known for his roles in Westerns, where he often played the tough, silent cowboy. He appeared in many classic Westerns, including "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Searchers," and "The Wild Bunch." He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "The Last Picture Show" in 1971.
Despite his success in Hollywood, Johnson never forgot his roots. He continued to compete in rodeos throughout his life and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1973. He also owned a ranch in Arizona and was an avid horseman.
Johnson passed away on April 8, 1996, at the age of 77. He left behind a legacy as one of Hollywood's greatest Western actors and a true cowboy at heart.

About Death
Johnson continued to work almost steadily until his death from a heart attack at the age of 77. On April 8, 1996, the veteran actor collapsed while visiting his 96-year-old mother Ollie at Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona, the suburban Phoenix retirement community where they both lived. Johnson's body was later transported from Arizona to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, for burial at the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
