About Ben Shelly
Ben Shelly, the President of the Navajo Nation, was born on July 6, 1947, in Thoreau, New Mexico. He grew up in a traditional Navajo family and learned the importance of hard work and dedication from his parents. Shelly attended Navajo Community College and later earned a degree in business administration from the University of Albuquerque.
Shelly began his career in public service as a member of the Navajo Nation Council in 1985. He served as a council delegate for 18 years before being elected as Vice President of the Navajo Nation in 2006. In 2010, Shelly was elected as the President of the Navajo Nation, becoming the first Navajo Nation President to be elected under the new three-branch government system.

About Death
Shelly died on March 22, 2023, at a hospital in Gallup, New Mexico at the age of 75. His spokesman stated he died from a “long illness”. Navajo nation president Buu Nygren ordered the flags on the Navajo reservation to be lowered.
