About Bhaskar Maiya

Bhaskar Maiya is a multifaceted Indian writer, author, scholar, translator, and professor born on December 31, 1941. He has made significant contributions to the field of literature, particularly in the areas of Indian philosophy, culture, and religion.

Maiya's academic career began at the University of Mysore, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English literature. He then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa in the United States.

Throughout his career, Maiya has authored numerous books and articles on Indian literature, philosophy, and culture. His works include "The Philosophy of Bhagavad Gita," "The Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation," and "The Mahabharata: A Modern Rendering."

Maiya has also translated several works from Kannada, including "The Life of Saint Shishunala Sharif" and "The Life of Saint Kanakadasa." His translations have been praised for their accuracy and readability.

In addition to his writing and translation work, Maiya has also served as a professor of English and Comparative Literature at various universities in India and the United States. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago.

Maiya's contributions to Indian literature and philosophy have earned him numerous awards and honors, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in 2004. He continues to be an influential figure in the field of Indian literature and philosophy.

About Death

Maiya died on 6 May 2021, at the age of 70 in Udupi, Mangalore due to COVID-19 complications and cardiac arrest. He was hospitalized about four days prior to his death as he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bramavara, Udupi.
