About Curtis Cokes
Curtis Cokes, born on June 15, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, was a professional boxer who made a name for himself in the 1960s. He was a two-time welterweight champion and had a career record of 62 wins, 14 losses, and 4 draws.
Cokes started his boxing career in 1958 and quickly made a name for himself as a skilled and powerful fighter. He won his first 24 fights before suffering his first loss in 1961. However, he bounced back and won the welterweight title in 1966 by defeating Manny Gonzalez.
Cokes successfully defended his title three times before losing it to Jose Napoles in 1969. He retired from boxing in 1972 after a career that spanned 14 years.
In addition to his boxing career, Cokes was also a successful businessman. He owned a gym in Dallas and trained many young boxers, including his son, Curtis Cokes Jr.
Cokes was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003, and his legacy as one of the greatest welterweight boxers of all time lives on.
