Gabourey Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents, Alice Tan Ridley and Ibnou Sidibe, were both performers, and Gabourey grew up surrounded by music and theater. In 2009, Gabourey auditioned for the lead role in the film Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire.
