About Gabourey Sidibe

Gabourey Sidibe: From Precious to Empire

Gabourey Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents, Alice Tan Ridley and Ibnou Sidibe, were both performers, and Gabourey grew up surrounded by music and theater. Despite her love for the arts, she struggled with self-esteem issues and was often bullied for her weight and appearance.

In 2009, Gabourey auditioned for the lead role in the film Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire. She beat out hundreds of other actresses for the part of Claireece "Precious" Jones, a teenage girl who is pregnant with her second child and living in poverty and abuse. Gabourey's powerful performance earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

After Precious, Gabourey continued to act in film and television, including roles in Tower Heist, American Horror Story, and Difficult People. In 2015, she landed a starring role in the hit television series Empire, playing the character Becky Williams. Her portrayal of Becky, a talented assistant who rises through the ranks of the music industry, has been praised for its humor and heart.

Off-screen, Gabourey has been an advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance. She has spoken openly about her own struggles with weight and body image, and has encouraged others to embrace their bodies and reject societal beauty standards. In 2017, she published a memoir, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare, which chronicles her life and career.

Gabourey's talent and resilience have made her a beloved figure in Hollywood and beyond. As she continues to break barriers and inspire others, she remains a shining example of what it means to be confident, courageous, and true to oneself.
