About Garvin Alston
Garvin Alston: The Pitching Coach Who Helped Bring the Oakland A's Back to Life
Garvin Alston was born on December 8, 1971, in Mount Vernon, New York. He grew up playing baseball and basketball, but it was on the diamond where he truly excelled. Alston was a standout pitcher in high school and went on to play college ball at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
After college, Alston was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 10th round of the 1996 MLB draft. He spent several years in the minor leagues before making his major league debut with the Rockies in 1998. Alston bounced around the majors for a few years, playing for the Rockies, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Alston's playing career was cut short by injuries, but he quickly found a new calling as a pitching coach. He worked his way up through the minor leagues, coaching for the Diamondbacks, the Boston Red Sox, and the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2018, Alston was hired as the pitching coach for the Oakland A's.
Alston's impact on the A's was immediate. He helped turn around a pitching staff that had struggled in previous years, leading the team to a playoff berth in his first season. Alston's ability to connect with his players and his attention to detail have made him a valuable asset to the A's organization.
Off the field, Alston is known for his dedication to his family and his community. He is involved in several charitable organizations, including the Garvin Alston Foundation, which provides scholarships and mentoring to young athletes.
Garvin Alston's journey from a small town in New York to the major leagues is a testament to his hard work and determination. As the pitching coach for the Oakland A's, he has helped bring the team back to life and has cemented his place as one of the top coaches in the game.
