About Gary Rossington
Gary Rossington is a true rock and roll legend. Born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, Rossington is best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of the iconic Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Rossington's musical journey began in his teenage years when he started playing guitar and formed his first band, The Noble Five. In 1964, he met Ronnie Van Zant, who would become his lifelong friend and bandmate. Together with Van Zant, Rossington co-founded Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969, and the band quickly became one of the most influential and successful acts of the 1970s.
As a guitarist, Rossington's style is characterized by his soulful and bluesy playing, which perfectly complemented Van Zant's powerful vocals. His signature guitar sound can be heard on some of Lynyrd Skynyrd's biggest hits, including "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "Gimme Three Steps."
Despite the band's success, Lynyrd Skynyrd faced numerous challenges throughout their career, including the tragic plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of Van Zant and several other band members. Rossington himself was seriously injured in the crash but eventually recovered and continued to play with the band.
In addition to his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other musicians, including The Rossington Collins Band and The Rossington Band.
Today, Rossington continues to tour and perform with Lynyrd Skynyrd, keeping the band's legacy alive for new generations of fans. His contributions to Southern rock and American music as a whole have earned him a well-deserved place in the pantheon of rock and roll greats.
