About George Lazenby
George Lazenby: The One-Time Bond
George Lazenby was born on September 5, 1939, in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. He grew up in a working-class family and left school at the age of 14 to work as a car mechanic. However, he had bigger dreams and eventually moved to London to pursue a career in modeling.
Lazenby's good looks and charisma quickly caught the attention of the film industry, and he was cast as James Bond in the 1969 film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Despite being a relative unknown at the time, Lazenby impressed audiences with his portrayal of the iconic spy.
However, Lazenby's tenure as Bond was short-lived. He famously turned down a seven-film contract, believing that the character was becoming outdated and that he could have a more diverse career outside of the franchise. This decision was met with criticism and disappointment from fans and the industry alike.
After leaving the Bond franchise, Lazenby struggled to find success in Hollywood. He appeared in a few films, including "Universal Soldier" and "The Kentucky Fried Movie," but never achieved the same level of fame as he did with Bond.
Despite this, Lazenby continued to work in the industry and even returned to the Bond franchise in 1983 for the video game "James Bond 007: A View to a Kill." He also had a recurring role on the hit television series "General Hospital" in the 1980s.
In recent years, Lazenby has become more open about his time as Bond and the reasons behind his departure from the franchise. He has also appeared in several documentaries about the Bond films and his own life.
Today, at the age of 82, Lazenby remains a beloved figure in the Bond fandom and a reminder of a time when the franchise was still finding its footing. His brief but memorable stint as 007 will always be a part of cinema history.
