About James Whitmore
James Whitmore was a versatile actor who left an indelible mark on Hollywood during his long and illustrious career. Born on October 1, 1921, in White Plains, New York, Whitmore grew up in a family of actors and performers. He attended Yale University, where he studied drama and honed his craft.
Whitmore made his Broadway debut in 1944 in the play "Command Decision," and soon after, he landed his first film role in "The Undercover Man" (1949). He quickly established himself as a talented character actor, appearing in a wide range of films and television shows over the years.
One of Whitmore's most memorable performances was in the film "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), in which he played Brooks Hatlen, an elderly inmate who struggles to adjust to life outside of prison. His poignant portrayal earned him critical acclaim and a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Throughout his career, Whitmore also appeared in numerous other films, including "Kiss Me, Kate" (1953), "Them!" (1954), "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950), and "Planet of the Apes" (1968). He also made many television appearances, including roles on "The Twilight Zone," "Gunsmoke," and "The Big Valley."
In addition to his acting work, Whitmore was also a dedicated activist and philanthropist. He was a vocal supporter of the arts and education, and he worked tirelessly to promote literacy and the importance of reading.
Whitmore passed away on February 6, 2009, at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy of memorable performances and a commitment to making the world a better place. As his friend and fellow actor Morgan Freeman once said, "James Whitmore was a true American original, a great actor, and a great man."
