Jean Piat: The French Actor and Author Who Conquered the Stage and Screen

Jean Piat was a true icon of French culture, a versatile artist who excelled both as an actor and an author. Born on September 23, 1924, in Lannoy, France, Piat grew up in a family of actors and was destined to follow in their footsteps. He started his career in the theater in the 1940s and quickly gained recognition for his talent and charisma.

Piat's breakthrough came in 1953 when he starred in the play "Le Diable et le Bon Dieu" by Jean-Paul Sartre, directed by Louis Jouvet. The play was a huge success and established Piat as one of the leading actors of his generation. He went on to perform in numerous plays, including "Le Cid" by Pierre Corneille, "Le Misanthrope" by Molière, and "Les Fourberies de Scapin" by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin.

In the 1960s, Piat turned to the screen and appeared in several films, including "Le Capitaine Fracasse" by Pierre Gaspard-Huit and "Les Amitiés Particulières" by Jean Delannoy. He also became a familiar face on French television, hosting the popular show "Au Théâtre Ce Soir" from 1966 to 1987.

But Piat was not content with just acting. He was also a prolific author, writing several books, including his memoirs "Le Temps des Gares" and the novel "La Mort de Molière." He was also a respected voice actor, lending his voice to numerous documentaries and audiobooks.

Throughout his career, Piat remained a beloved figure in French culture, admired for his talent, his wit, and his charm. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1991 and continued to perform and write until his death in 2018 at the age of 93.
