Born on March 18, 1966, in Tacoma, Washington, Cantrell grew up in a musical family and was drawn to the guitar at a young age. In the late 1980s, Cantrell formed the band Alice in Chains with singer Layne Staley. The band quickly gained a following with their heavy, grunge-influenced sound and powerful lyrics.
