About Joan Darling
Joan Darling is a true trailblazer in the entertainment industry. Born on April 14, 1935, in Boston, Massachusetts, Darling began her career as an actress in the 1960s. She quickly made a name for herself, appearing in popular TV shows like "The Twilight Zone" and "The Nurses."
But it was her work behind the camera that truly set her apart. In 1972, Darling became the first woman to win an Emmy Award for directing, for an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She went on to direct episodes of other hit shows like "M*A*S*H," "Rhoda," and "Magnum, P.I."
Darling also made history as the first woman to direct a major motion picture, with the 1979 film "First Love." She continued to direct TV shows and movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and even wrote and directed her own feature film, "The Check Is in the Mail..." in 1986.
In addition to her groundbreaking work in the entertainment industry, Darling is also an accomplished author. She has written several books, including "The Girl Who Wanted to Be a Boy," a memoir about her experiences growing up as a tomboy in the 1940s and 1950s.
Throughout her career, Darling has been a fierce advocate for women in the entertainment industry. She has spoken out about the lack of opportunities for female directors and has worked to mentor and support other women in the field.
Today, at the age of 86, Darling continues to inspire and empower others with her work. She remains a true icon in the entertainment industry and a role model for women everywhere.
