He began his boxing career in the 1960s and fought in the welterweight division. However, after sustaining a serious injury, Keyes was forced to retire from boxing.

In the early 1970s, Keyes moved to Seattle and began working as a bartender. It was there that he was discovered by the legendary pornographer, Jim Mitchell. Mitchell cast Keyes in his film, "Behind the Green Door," which became a huge success and catapulted Keyes to stardom.

Keyes went on to appear in over 100 adult films, including "The Opening of Misty Beethoven" and "Candy Goes to Hollywood." He was known for his good looks, muscular physique, and impressive stamina.

Despite his success in the adult film industry, Keyes never forgot his roots in boxing. He continued to train and even worked as a boxing coach for a time.

In his later years, Keyes became an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. He spoke openly about his own experiences with the disease and worked tirelessly to educate others.

Johnnie Keyes passed away on June 3, 2018, at the age of 78. He will be remembered as a trailblazer in the adult film industry and a champion for HIV/AIDS awareness.
