About Kristen Johnston
Kristen Johnston: From Alien to Advocate
Kristen Johnston has always been a force to be reckoned with. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1967, Johnston grew up in a family of lawyers and politicians. But she had different aspirations. After studying drama at New York University, Johnston landed her first big break in the hit sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" in 1996. Her portrayal of the tall, awkward alien Sally Solomon earned her two Emmy Awards and a legion of fans.
But behind the scenes, Johnston was struggling with addiction. In her 2012 memoir "Guts," she revealed that she had been addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs for years, and had hit rock bottom in 2006. "I was in a very dark place," she told Rolling Stone in a 2019 interview. "I didn't think I was going to make it."
But Johnston did make it. She got sober, and began using her platform to advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness. In 2013, she founded the nonprofit organization SLAM (Sobriety, Learning and Motivation), which provides support and resources for young people in recovery.
Johnston's acting career has continued to thrive as well. She has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including "The Exes," "Mom," and "The Walking Dead." In 2019, she returned to the stage in the Broadway revival of "The Importance of Being Earnest."
Throughout it all, Johnston has remained fiercely independent and unapologetically herself. "I'm not afraid to be weird," she said in a 2019 interview with The Guardian. "I'm not afraid to be different. I'm not afraid to be vulnerable."
And that's what makes Kristen Johnston such a beloved figure in Hollywood and beyond. She's not afraid to be human, flaws and all. As she told Rolling Stone, "I'm just a person who's trying to do the best she can." And that's more than enough.
