About Lupe Ontiveros

Lupe Ontiveros was a Mexican-American actress who left an indelible mark on Hollywood. Born on September 17, 1942, in El Paso, Texas, Ontiveros grew up in a large family of 17 siblings. She worked as a social worker before pursuing her passion for acting.

Ontiveros made her film debut in 1976 in the movie "Zoot Suit," and went on to appear in over 100 films and television shows. She was best known for her roles in "Selena," "As Good as It Gets," and "Desperate Housewives."

Despite her success, Ontiveros often played stereotypical roles of maids and housekeepers, which she spoke out against. She was a vocal advocate for more diverse and authentic representation of Latinx characters in Hollywood.

Ontiveros was also a dedicated activist, advocating for immigrant rights and education. She was a founding member of the Latino Theater Company in Los Angeles and served on the board of the Latino Museum.

Ontiveros passed away on July 26, 2012, at the age of 69, after a battle with liver cancer. Her legacy lives on through her impactful performances and advocacy work.

About Death

Ontiveros died on July 26, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, California at the age of 69 after a battle with liver cancer. She was survived by her husband and children. Her memorial was on August 2, 2012. Her funeral was carried out the following day, where her casket was transported and buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
