The story was an instant success and led to the publication of her first novel, "The Man in Lower Ten," in 1909. The book was a bestseller and established Rinehart as a master of the mystery genre.

Over the course of her career, Rinehart wrote more than 70 books, including mysteries, romances, and memoirs. She was known for her vivid characters, intricate plots, and witty dialogue. Her most famous work, "The Bat," was adapted into a play and later became the basis for the movie "The Bat Whispers."

Rinehart was also a pioneer in the field of true crime writing. In 1931, she published "The Album," a collection of true crime stories that she had covered as a journalist. The book was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish the true crime genre.

Despite her success, Rinehart faced many challenges as a female writer in a male-dominated industry. She often struggled to balance her writing career with her responsibilities as a wife and mother. However, she remained committed to her craft and continued to write until her death in 1958.
