About Michael Potter
Michael Potter: The Rugby League Maverick
Michael Potter was born on September 24, 1963, in the small town of Casino, New South Wales, Australia. From a young age, he showed a natural talent for rugby league, and it wasn't long before he was scouted by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Potter made his first-grade debut for the Bulldogs in 1983 and quickly established himself as a formidable player. He was known for his speed, agility, and tactical awareness, and he soon became a fan favorite.
Over the course of his career, Potter played for several other teams, including the St. George Dragons, the Western Reds, and the Bradford Bulls. He also represented New South Wales in State of Origin matches and played for the Australian national team.
After retiring from playing in 1998, Potter turned his attention to coaching. He started out as an assistant coach for the St. George Illawarra Dragons before taking on the head coaching role at the Catalans Dragons in France.
In 2013, Potter was appointed head coach of the Wests Tigers, a team he had previously played for. Despite facing significant challenges, including injuries to key players and off-field controversies, Potter led the Tigers to a ninth-place finish in his first season.
However, despite his success, Potter was controversially sacked by the Tigers at the end of the 2014 season. Many fans and commentators felt that he had been unfairly treated and that his sacking was a result of internal politics within the club.
Since then, Potter has continued to work in rugby league, serving as an assistant coach for the Newcastle Knights and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He is widely respected within the rugby league community for his tactical knowledge, his commitment to his players, and his willingness to take risks.
Off the field, Potter is known for his laid-back personality and his love of surfing. He is also a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about his own struggles with depression.
In many ways, Michael Potter is a maverick within the rugby league world. He has never been afraid to challenge convention or take risks, and his innovative approach to coaching has won him many admirers. Despite the setbacks he has faced, he remains one of the most respected figures in the sport, and his legacy is sure to endure for many years to come.
