Napoleon Harris is a man of many talents. Born on February 25, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois, Harris made a name for himself as a standout football player before transitioning to a career in politics. His journey from the gridiron to the Capitol is a fascinating one, marked by perseverance, hard work, and a deep commitment to his community.
Harris grew up in a tough neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, where he learned the value of hard work and determination at an early age. He attended Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois, where he excelled as a football player. He went on to play at Northwestern University, where he was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time All-American.
After college, Harris was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played for the Raiders for four seasons before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2005. He played for the Vikings for two seasons before being traded back to the Raiders in 2007. He retired from the NFL in 2008, having played in 91 games and recorded 543 tackles, 10 sacks, and 3 interceptions.
After retiring from football, Harris turned his attention to politics. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2012, representing the 15th district. He was re-elected in 2016 and 2020. In the Senate, Harris has focused on issues such as education, public safety, and economic development. He has also been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, particularly in the areas of sentencing and re-entry.
Harris's commitment to his community extends beyond his work in the Senate. He is the founder of the Napoleon Harris Foundation, which provides scholarships and mentoring to young people in the Chicago area. He is also the owner of Beggars Pizza, a chain of pizzerias in the Chicago area.
Harris's achievements both on and off the field have earned him widespread recognition and respect. In 2014, he was inducted into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame.
