About Paul Dewar
Paul Dewar was a Canadian politician who served as a Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre from 2006 to 2015. Born on January 25, 1963, in Ottawa, Dewar was the son of Marion Dewar, a former mayor of Ottawa. He grew up in a politically active family and was inspired by his mother's commitment to social justice.
Dewar began his career as a teacher and later worked for the Canadian Union of Public Employees. In 2006, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP). During his time in office, Dewar was a vocal advocate for social justice, human rights, and environmental issues.
One of Dewar's most notable achievements was his work on the Canadian government's apology to residential school survivors. He also served as the NDP's foreign affairs critic and was a strong supporter of Palestinian rights. In 2012, he was named one of the world's top 100 public intellectuals by Foreign Policy magazine.
Dewar was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018 and passed away on February 6, 2019, at the age of 56. His death was mourned by many in the Canadian political community, who praised his dedication to social justice and his tireless advocacy for marginalized communities.
