About Robert Thurman

Robert Thurman is a man of many talents. He is a renowned Buddhist writer, academic, and advocate for social justice. Born on August 3, 1941, in New York City, Thurman grew up in a family of intellectuals. His father was a professor of English at Columbia University, and his mother was a writer and editor.

Thurman attended Philips Exeter Academy and then Harvard University, where he earned a degree in philosophy. He went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies.

Thurman's interest in Buddhism began in the 1960s, when he traveled to India and met the Dalai Lama. He became one of the first Americans to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk and spent several years studying and practicing in India and Nepal.

Thurman is the author of numerous books on Buddhism, including "The Tibetan Book of the Dead," "Inner Revolution," and "Why the Dalai Lama Matters." He is also a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and the founder of the Tibet House US, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Tibetan culture.

Thurman is known for his passionate advocacy for social justice and human rights. He has been a vocal critic of the Chinese government's treatment of Tibet and has worked to raise awareness of the issue in the United States.

Thurman's work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, and the Global Leadership Award from the United Nations.
