His father was a fishing boat captain who also played the trumpet, and his mother was a homemaker who loved to sing. Stiles inherited their love of music and performance, and he began honing his skills as a comedian and actor at a young age.

Stiles got his start in comedy in the early 1980s, performing at local clubs and theaters in Vancouver, Canada. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented improviser, and he was soon invited to join the cast of the hit TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
