About Sabino Vengco
Sabino Vengco: The Theologian Priest Who Challenged the Status Quo
Sabino Vengco, born on March 9, 1942, in the Philippines, is a Catholic priest, theologian, and author who has dedicated his life to challenging the status quo. He is known for his progressive views on social justice, human rights, and interfaith dialogue.
Vengco's journey to becoming a theologian began when he joined the Society of Jesus in 1960. He studied philosophy and theology in the Philippines and later earned a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He also studied at the Harvard Divinity School and the University of California, Berkeley.
Throughout his career, Vengco has been a vocal advocate for social justice and human rights. He has written extensively on these topics, including his book "Theology of Human Rights" which explores the intersection of theology and human rights. He has also been a strong advocate for interfaith dialogue, believing that understanding and respecting different religions is essential for creating a more peaceful world.
Vengco's progressive views have not always been welcomed by the Catholic Church. In the 1980s, he was suspended from his teaching position at the Ateneo de Manila University for his views on social justice and human rights. However, he continued to speak out and was eventually reinstated.
Despite facing opposition, Vengco has remained committed to his beliefs. He has been a strong voice for the marginalized and oppressed, including the poor, indigenous peoples, and victims of human rights abuses. He has also been a leader in the Catholic Church's efforts to address the issue of sexual abuse by clergy.
Vengco's contributions to theology and social justice have been recognized both in the Philippines and internationally. He has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding in 1997.
Today, at the age of 79, Vengco continues to be an active voice for social justice and human rights. He remains a respected theologian and author, and his work continues to inspire others to challenge the status quo and work towards a more just and peaceful world.
