About Sam Elliott
Sam Elliott: The Voice of the West
Sam Elliott's deep, resonant voice is instantly recognizable. It's the voice of the West, the voice of cowboys and outlaws, of rugged individualism and unyielding determination. But there's more to Elliott than just his voice. He's a talented actor with a long and varied career, and a man who's lived life on his own terms.
Elliott was born in Sacramento, California, in 1944. His father was a high school teacher and his mother was a physical training instructor. Elliott grew up in Oregon, where he developed a love for the outdoors and a passion for acting. He attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, before transferring to the University of Oregon, where he studied theater.
After college, Elliott moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. He landed his first role in the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), playing a card player. He went on to appear in a number of films and TV shows throughout the 1970s, including "The Legacy" (1978) and "The Sacketts" (1979).
But it was his role in the 1985 film "Mask" that really put Elliott on the map. He played the biker Gar, a role that earned him critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. From there, he went on to appear in a number of iconic films, including "Road House" (1989), "Tombstone" (1993), and "The Big Lebowski" (1998).
Elliott's career has been marked by his distinctive voice and his rugged, masculine persona. He's played cowboys, soldiers, and tough guys, but he's also shown his range as an actor, taking on more nuanced roles in films like "The Hero" (2017) and "A Star is Born" (2018).
Off-screen, Elliott is known for his love of the outdoors and his commitment to environmental causes. He's been married to actress Katharine Ross since 1984, and the couple has one daughter together.
At 77 years old, Elliott shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to work in film and TV, and his voice remains as powerful and distinctive as ever. He's a true icon of American cinema, and a testament to the enduring appeal of the Western genre.
