About Stephen Root
Stephen Root: The Character Actor Who Steals the Show
Stephen Root has been a fixture in Hollywood for over three decades, but you might not know his name. That's because Root is a character actor, the kind of performer who disappears into a role, making the other actors look good while stealing the show. He's played everything from a mild-mannered office drone to a deranged neo-Nazi, and he's done it all with a quiet intensity that's impossible to ignore.
Root was born in Sarasota, Florida, in 1951, and he got his start in show business in the '80s, appearing in small roles on TV shows like "The Love Boat" and "Night Court." But it wasn't until the '90s that he really hit his stride, thanks to a string of memorable performances in movies like "Office Space," "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," and "No Country for Old Men."
In "Office Space," Root played Milton Waddams, a meek and put-upon office worker who's constantly bullied by his boss. Root's performance is a masterclass in understated comedy, as he mutters to himself and shuffles around the office, always on the verge of a breakdown. The character became an instant cult classic, and Root's deadpan delivery of lines like "I believe you have my stapler" has become a meme.
In "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," Root played a blind radio station owner who helps the film's heroes on their journey. It's a small role, but Root imbues it with a warmth and humanity that makes it one of the film's most memorable moments. And in "No Country for Old Men," Root played a hapless gas station owner who crosses paths with the film's villain, Anton Chigurh. It's a brief but unforgettable scene, as Root's character tries to reason with Chigurh, only to be met with a chilling response: "What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"
Root has continued to work steadily in the years since, appearing in everything from "True Blood" to "Barry." He's won critical acclaim for his work on the HBO series "Succession," where he plays a conniving billionaire who's always one step ahead of his rivals. And he's even lent his voice to animated shows like "King of the Hill" and "Adventure Time."
Through it all, Root has
