About Tembi Locke

Tembi Locke: The Actress Who Found Her Voice

Tembi Locke was born on July 26, 1970, in Houston, Texas. She grew up in a family of artists and musicians, and from a young age, she knew that she wanted to be an actress. After graduating from Wesleyan University, she moved to New York City to pursue her dream.

Locke's breakthrough role came in 1996 when she was cast as Grace Wilcox in the hit TV series "E.R." She went on to appear in numerous TV shows and films, including "Dharma & Greg," "The Mentalist," "The Magicians," and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

But Locke's journey to success was not without its challenges. In 2002, she was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy, and although she went into remission, the experience left her feeling lost and disconnected from her own voice.

It was during this time that Locke discovered her passion for writing. She began to journal about her experiences, and eventually, she turned her writing into a one-woman show called "The Kitchen Widow." The show, which explored her journey through cancer and grief, was a critical and commercial success.

Locke has since become an advocate for cancer patients and their families. She has spoken at numerous events and has written about her experiences in publications such as The New York Times and The Huffington Post.

In 2019, Locke published her memoir, "From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home." The book tells the story of her marriage to Saro, an Italian chef, and their life together in Sicily. It also explores her journey through grief after Saro's death from cancer.

Locke's memoir has been praised for its honesty and vulnerability. Oprah Winfrey selected it as a book club pick, and Reese Witherspoon's production company is developing it into a series for Netflix.

Locke's journey has been one of resilience and self-discovery. Through her acting, writing, and advocacy work, she has found her voice and has become a powerful voice for those who are struggling with cancer and grief.
