About Willie Thorne

William Joseph Thorne (4 March 1954 – 17 June 2020) was an English professional snooker player. He won the 1985 Classic, his only ranking title. He lost 14–16 to Steve Davis in the final of the 1985 UK Championship after leading 13–8. Despite such a setback, he would go on to hold the all time record in the 'Pocket Money' round of BBC TV show Big Break. He was noted for his break-building, earning the nickname "Mr Maximum." After retiring as a player, Thorne became a snooker commentator, primarily for the BBC.

He is also known as William Joseph Thorne.
