About Mannix
Mannix: The Sleuth Who Broke the Mold
In 1967, television audiences were introduced to a new kind of detective: Joe Mannix, played by Mike Connors. Unlike the suave, sophisticated detectives of previous eras, Mannix was a tough, no-nonsense private investigator who didn't hesitate to get his hands dirty. He was a man of action, with a sharp mind and a quick wit, and he quickly became a fan favorite.
Created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the same team behind Columbo and Murder, She Wrote, Mannix was a groundbreaking show in many ways. It was one of the first shows to feature an African American in a prominent role (Gail Fisher as Mannix's secretary, Peggy), and it tackled issues like racism and drug addiction in a way that few other shows of the time did.
But what really set Mannix apart was its style. The show was filmed in a gritty, realistic style that was more reminiscent of a film noir than a typical TV show. The camera work was innovative, with handheld shots and unusual angles that gave the show a sense of urgency and immediacy.
Mannix was a hit with audiences and critics alike, earning four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for Connors. It ran for eight seasons, from 1967 to 1975, and remains a beloved classic of the detective genre.
