About The Torkelsons

The Torkelsons was a heartwarming family sitcom that aired on NBC from 1991 to 1993. Created by Lynn Montgomery, the show followed the daily struggles and triumphs of the Torkelson family, a single mother and her five children living in Oklahoma.

At the center of the show was the spunky and optimistic 14-year-old Dorothy Jane Torkelson, played by Olivia Burnette. Dorothy Jane's dreams of becoming a writer and finding true love were often at odds with the realities of her family's financial struggles and her mother's dating misadventures.

Despite its short run, The Torkelsons was praised for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family and its emphasis on the importance of love and perseverance. The show also featured a talented cast, including Connie Ray as the Torkelson matriarch, and guest appearances from future stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Brittany Murphy.

While The Torkelsons may not have achieved the same level of cultural impact as other '90s sitcoms, its legacy lives on through its devoted fanbase and its influence on later family-oriented shows such as Gilmore Girls and Parenthood.
